Intestinal obstruction

What is it?

It is an alteration of the normal intestinal movements (motility) due to a mechanical cause or to a significant modification of the motility. Common causes include:
• Adhesions of previous abdominal surgeries
• Masses within the intestine (tumors, ingested foreign bodies, or parasites)
• Twisting of a portion of intestine
• Intussusception (sliding of the intestine into itself)

• Abdominal distension
• Constipation / Absence of gas passage through the rectum
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea / Vomiting

Diagnostic Studies

• Blood tests
• Abdominal and Thorax X-rays
• TAC of abdomen

• Intravenous Serums
• Fasting
• Antibiotic

* It works to resolve the cause of the obstruction with any of these techniques:
• Laparotomy (open abdominal surgery) explorer
• Laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery with an abdominal camera) explorer
* Adhesions are removed, internal or external hernias are corrected, or tumors are removed.
